Wonderland Overdrive v2

After 7 years of building D-Style circuits, no one amp fully hit the mark with cleans and overdrive. The amps would either have great cleans, or a great OD, but rarely both. It was also tough to find a voicing that would work well with a range of guitars, until now. The Wonderland Overdrive mixes two different D-Style amps to create a custom hybrid “low plate” (strat friendly) 80’s D-Style with on-board tube reverb. The amp has a beautiful clean channel with a Fender Blackface style tones – sweet, clear, articulate, with a silky shimmer. It’s very well voiced for strat and tele players, adding some mids that helps fill out lower-output pickups with more beefiness. The versatility of being able to compliment any guitar was another thing we were able to check off the list – so your strat or tele will sounds just as good as your humbucking guitar.

Stacked on top of the awesome cleans is a beefy and chewy overdrive that has a ton of harmonic complexity and that roars! We worked for countless hours to get the overdrive right and the v2 circuit is a monster, with smooth high gain tones. The amp does all the D-style attributes; endless sustain, the controlled feedback, the honky mids, the chirp, the touch sensitivity…and all the D-Style tones are there…from Ford, to Carlton, to Mayer. The amp has so many different ways to tune your sound, including three EQ boosts (bright, mid, and deep), two-tube reverb, preamp boost on both channels and a footswitch to toggle the channels and operate the boost. The Wonderland Overdrive is in a compact setup that is easy to dial in and a lot of fun to play.

The amp is built into a powdercoated aluminum chassis and is available in black or silver with choice of cabinet. Circuit boards are CNC punched and the amp is handwired with high end components including Orange Drop capacitors, F&T electrolytic filters, new production Dale and Koa resistors, and custom taper control pots. Combos and matching speaker cabinets are available. The amp comes with a heavy duty power cord, two button footswitch, and custom 7-pin locking DIN footswitch cable. JJ tubes are standard and so is half power.

Dirty Wonderland

The Dirty Wonderland was inspired from an extremely rare, limited edition amplifier built in 2008. We had the pleasure of spending 4 weeks with that amp, reverse engineered the circuit, and created our own. After years of building, we decided to push the limits a bit with some additional features. The Dirty Wonderland is a more customized version of that amp; and while it has the exact same great cleans, we added two breakup switches on the back for more flexibility – Dirty preamp and Dirty power amp. These switches give the amp some fantastic attitude, growl, and add just a little bit of hair on the notes when engaged. In no way do those switches compromise tone, they merely disconnect negative feedback loops in the amp, and the end result is extremely fun.

The Dirty Wonderland has big, sparkly clean tones, similar to a Blackface Super Reverb with a more midrange. The single channel design stays mostly clean, but will break up a little at higher levels of gain or overall volume. It has three EQ boosts (bright, mid, and deep) allowing the player to quickly select frequency boosts for different guitars or different sounds. When pushed with the mid boost on, you can get a sweet blues crunch with higher output pickups (especially with the Dirty switches and/or the 50w version), and even some controlled feedback while remaining “clean”.

The Dirty Wonderland has an open, spacious, airy sound that is uncompressed, while staying relatively tight and bold. It’s incredibly lush three-tube reverb was carefully tuned for a huge effect that is never overpowering and won’t wash out. The reverb is dialed in with two controls on the front panel, ‘send’ and ‘return’ – which act as reverb depth and level adjustments. Also, because of its abundance of clean headroom, the Dirty Wonderland makes a great pedal platform. Overall the voicing is a slightly dark and mellow, and while originally voiced for a strat, works quite well with all styles of guitar.

Built into a powdercoated aluminum chassis, the Dirty Wonderland construction is as elegant as the tones. The chassis was highly engineered and includes almost all of the mounting hardware cold forged right into the box, leaving almost no parts that can ‘come loose’ over time. The circuit boards are punched by CNC, but all of the wiring is done by hand as you can see in the pictures. The amp is build with high end Orange Drop coupling capacitors, F&T Electrolytic filters, custom taper pots, and a mix of current new production resistors chosen for an ultra quiet but very connected, earthy playing experience.

The amp can be ordered in tolex or suede and matching speaker cabinets are available. Combos are also available. The amp comes with a heavy duty AC power cord.

Steel String Sultan

The Steel String Sultan is a (lower wattage and physically smaller) Steel String Singer type amp. The preamp is exactly the same, but we took out the FET and the footswitch options to pack this powerhouse into a 19″ chassis! This is a very strong, punchy amp, that is crisp and clean, just like it’s bigger 150w version. The 6L6 power section gives a bit of a more ‘guitar amp’ feel (vs 6550), while still capturing some of the hi-fi qualities of the big SSS.

The power section of the Steel String Sultan has the cathode follower that really kicks your clean tones up a notch! When compared to the Wonderland series, the Sultan (and most SSS) will be crisper, stiffer, cleaner, and less forgiving with a very percussive high output. The SSS in nature is a great high-output (but clean) blues amp, but works very well for pedals, and fusion/rock sounds as well. While the preamp we build was original designed for Eric Johnson (by HAD) we can tweak it for more SRV and Mayer tones.

The Steel String Sultan is built into a bare aluminum chassis with faceplates, so more design options are available (if you wanted a custom color). All machining and drilling is done by CNC, including the circuit boards, all wiring is done by hand. High end components include Orange Drop and NTE capacitors, F&T Electrolytics, and new production Dale, Vishay, and Koa resistors. King Zapata of the Gary Clark Jr band played one of our Steel String Sultans on his 2016 world tour. Many people have considered this amp to be one of the best they have ever played.

Steel String Singer

The Amplified Nation Steel String Singer is modeled after Steel String Singer #005, originally built for Eric Johnson and now owned by Carlos Santana. This version of the SSS is 4 x 6550 150w, and the power section is articulate, punchy, and stays clean to very high levels of volume. The amp has three-tube reverb, a cathode follower driver, send and return reverb controls, six-position tone filters, half power with LED indicator, bright and deep boosts, and also a rock/jazz EQ switch.

When first plugging into the big SSS, you will experience punch like you won’t believe. The sonic footprint of the 150w amp is huge. . The bass is tight and defined, with soaring “clean-lead” SRV tones. While most guitar amps only sustain while using overdrive, the SSS clean sustain is extraordinary. The SSS will also flip notes into feedback without overdrive. It is a remarkable experience to play one of these amps. The tones are very hi-fi and three-dimensional and the clean tones that the SSS provides are unmatched. Preamp boost and FET (additional gain stage) are built into the amp and are included on the footswitch.
