August 24, 2020The Bigger Bloom is an Overdrive Preamp pedal that captures the sound and feel of legendary D-style amplifiers. Built off the platform of our Big Bloom Overdrive, the Bigger Bloom adds slightly more gain and pronounced mids. The updated version provides more clarity at higher gain settings and delivers a throaty and forward attack that will drive your amp hard! The Bigger Bloom will effortlessly throw notes into controlled feedback; blooming with harmonics and musical overdrive. You will experience a smooth and singing sustain that only D-style amps are known for. With two EQ settings the Bigger Bloom can do jazzy saxophone-like licks or go full throttle for thick and saturated gain. The enclosure is equipped with top IN/OUT jacks and can be run off a 9v power supply or 9v battery.

First off, do not pay attention to the keyboard warriors on gear review sites saying that this pedal is an overpriced tube screamer or that the same sound can be replicated with “insert cheaper pedal name.” This pedal has a very unique sound I have never experienced that has a lot of mojo in it. If I could characterize the sound it would be like eating a big scoop of horse radish. Upon clicking on the pedal, which by the way has a super bright LED, I was very surprised by the sound. In “jazz” mode, the pedal is tamed down quite a bit and provides a very smooth-sounding overdrive reminiscent of a cranked fender amp with the tone knob turned down. “Rock” mode however is where things get interesting and this is where the pedal gains my curiosity. What baffles me about this pedal is that the low end of the guitar sounds absolutely massive while the top end retains a lot of clarity without being fizzy or flubby. As I said, its really hard to describe the overdrive character of this pedal because it acts like a big fuzz pedal on the low end, but as you go into the high end the sound retains a lot of clarity like a slightly pushed overdrive pedal would all while providing a lot of harmonic richness. The high end doesn’t get muffled like the high end would on a fuzz pedal. The only downside I can say about this pedal is that it is very “in your face” and if your playing is sub-par, it will definitely let you and whoever is listening know. There is no hiding mistakes with this pedal. Another thing that surprised me is that this pedal’s character changes quite a bit depending on the guitar you use. I know you’re thinking, “well duhh.” Some drive pedals just sound the same no matter what guitar you plug in. Plugging in each of my different PRS guitars (DC3, Custom 24, Tremonti) yielded different results that really brought out the character of the pickups rather than making each sound the same. Overall, this pedal is very unique and I don’t have buyer’s remorse about it at all. It definitely has its own mojo and for some reason, I have not been able to NOT play with it finding different sounds and just giggling at how awesome it sounds. Whatever black magic wizardry Taylor put into this pedal will definitely get you hooked. Ohh and if you’ve made it this far in the review, the pedal comes with a 9V battery installed. At least mine did.
